Frequently asked questions

What does ferulic acid add to Vitamin C and E?

Ferulic acid demonstrably doubles the efficacy of Vitamin C and E. It is a synergistic stabiliser: Vitamin C oxidises quickly in air and light — ferulic acid stabilises it, making the formula more durable and effective. Without ferulic acid, a significant portion of the Vitamin C would be oxidised before it reaches the skin cells.

Why do I need an antioxidant serum if I already use sun protection?

Sun protection blocks UV radiation. An antioxidant serum neutralises free radicals that are generated despite sun protection — through heat, pollution, infrared radiation, and HEV light. SPF and antioxidants are complementary, not interchangeable.

Does the serum make the skin lighter or is that just an optical effect?

Both. The brightening effect comes from two sources: Vitamin C inhibits melanin synthesis (where pigmentation forms), and the antioxidant complex prevents new oxidative damage that leads to uneven skin tone. The skin appears more even-toned and radiant — not lighter in the sense of changed pigmentation, but more luminous.

Can I use the serum morning and evening?

Yes in the morning, no in the evening. Vitamin C and the antioxidant effect are most important during the day to protect against oxidative damage. In the evening the skin is in repair mode, where growth factors or retinol work more effectively.

Is the serum suitable for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin?

To a limited extent. Vitamin C can cause slight irritation in some sensitive skins. Start with twice weekly application and build up gradually. If redness or burning persists beyond 4 weeks, this product may not be the right choice at this time. Always test on a small area first.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.
