Enlarged pores

Enlarged pores are mainly visible in the T-zone - on the nose, forehead and chin. Predisposition, excess sebum and declining skin elasticity make pores appear visually larger.

Here you'll find clarifying care from ZO Skin Health and iS Clinical that can refine the complexion.

What helps with enlarged pores?

Pore size is genetically determined - you can't actually "shrink" pores. But you can clearly improve their appearance. Enlarged pores develop when the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum and dead skin cells build up in the pore. With age, the skin loses elasticity, which makes the pores appear even larger.

The most important actives for enlarged pores: salicylic acid (BHA) is oil-soluble and comedolytic - it can clean the pores from within and dissolve sebum plugs. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) can balance excess sebum and visually refine the appearance of pores. Retinol (vitamin A) promotes natural skin renewal and can smooth the complexion in the long term.

The ZO Skin Health Oil Control Pads with salicylic acid are suitable as a daily exfoliant. The ZO Skin Health Complexion Renewal Pads use AHA/BHA dual exfoliation (glycolic acid and salicylic acid combined) for targeted sebum control and pore refinement. The iS Clinical Active Serum relies on botanical actives and salicylic acid and is also suitable for more sensitive skin.

Important: results need 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use. And as with any active-ingredient programme: don't forget sun protection, since retinol and acids make the skin more sensitive to light.

In our skincare studio in Cologne, we work on enlarged pores with a combination of professional peels and daily home care. Experience shows: consistency beats intensity. A mild daily exfoliant brings better results in the long term than an aggressive product that irritates the skin.

Related skin topics: Enlarged pores often occur together with blemished skin. If you notice the first fine lines at the same time, you'll find suitable products under anti-ageing.

Frequently asked questions about enlarged pores

How do you get rid of large pores?

Pores can't be permanently shrunk, but their appearance can be clearly improved. Regular cleansing with salicylic acid (BHA) keeps the pores clear, niacinamide can balance sebum production.

The ZO Skin Health Oil Control Pads as a daily exfoliant are a good starting point. Results show after 4-8 weeks.

Can enlarged pores be permanently shrunk?

Enlarged pores are largely genetic - pore size can't be completely eliminated. But the visibility can be clearly reduced: regular exfoliation with salicylic acid (BHA) keeps the pores clean, niacinamide can visually refine the appearance of pores, and retinol stimulates collagen formation around the pores. The combination of all three actives - as in the iS Clinical Active Serum or the ZO Skin Health Complexion Renewal Pads - delivers the best results.

What do dermatologists recommend for large pores?

For enlarged pores, dermatologists recommend a combination of chemical exfoliation (salicylic acid, glycolic acid) and retinol for long-term improvement.

These recommendations reflect the current state of dermatology. Professional treatments (microneedling, laser) can be a useful addition but don't replace daily care.

Which ingredients refine the appearance of pores?

Salicylic acid (BHA): oil-soluble, cleans the pores from within. Niacinamide (vitamin B3): regulates sebum, refines visually. Retinol (vitamin A): promotes skin renewal. Glycolic acid (AHA): removes dead skin cells at the surface.

These actives complement each other - our range includes products that combine them in coordinated concentrations.

Can enlarged pores get worse with age?

Yes. With age, the skin loses collagen and elasticity, which makes the pores appear visually larger. UV radiation additionally accelerates this process.

That's why sun protection is important with enlarged pores too - not only against wrinkles, but also to preserve the skin structure in the long term.
