Why skin needs different care after treatments
Treatments such as microneedling, chemical peels or laser applications put the skin into a brief, controlled state of irritation. The barrier is temporarily more permeable, the sensitivity to actives, UV radiation and friction clearly increased. That's intended, and that's exactly why different care rules apply in the first days.
We also use these products after treatments in our skincare studio in Cologne. They're put together to be soothing, without strong actives like acids or retinol, and cover the most important care steps: gentle cleansing, moisture, barrier building and mineral sun protection.

Cleanser, barrier, follow-up care, sunscreen
The top 4 for the first days
Cleanser: A gentle emulsion without acids or enzymes, for sensitised skin after treatment.
Barrier protection from day 1: A rich balm seals the weakened skin barrier and soothes redness.
Follow-up care from day 3: Antioxidants (which protect skin cells from free radicals) support recovery after the treatment has irritated the skin.
Sunscreen: Mineral SPF 50 based on zinc oxide, can be applied right after the treatment.

Sensitive skin
If your skin also reacts sensitively outside the recovery phase, the targeted care for sensitised skin helps.
Weakened skin barrier
A weakened skin barrier is the main issue after treatments. Here you'll find products that rebuild the barrier step by step, also outside the recovery phase.
Pigment spots
After treatments, some skin types can develop new pigment spots, because the skin reacts to the irritation with discolouration. Mineral sun protection prevents this. For existing pigment spots: the targeted pigment care.
Care day by day
Day 0 to 1
The skin is warm, reddened and reacts sensitively to friction and ingredients. Reduce care to the essentials: a gentle cleanser without actives, soothing moisture, mineral sun protection.
Skip make-up in the first 24 hours; after that apply only mineral make-up and without friction.
Day 2 to 3
Redness subsides, the skin begins to regenerate visibly. You can reintroduce hyaluronic-acid-based serums like the iS Clinical Hydra-Cool Serum and growth factors.
Antioxidants (which protect the skin cells from free radicals) like ZO Skin Health Daily Power Defense can be carefully built back in.
Day 4 to 7
Most reactions have subsided; light flaking or a feeling of tightness can still occur. Gradual return to your usual care as soon as the skin no longer feels sensitive.
With certain ZO Skin Health peels, retinol is often part of the recovery and is reapplied the day after the treatment.
From day 8
With most treatments, the skin has regenerated by this point.
With stronger peels like the ZO Skin Health 3-Step or TCA peels and with fractional lasers, the reaction phase can last longer. Follow the instructions of your treatment provider.
Frequently asked questions about care after treatments
What can I apply right after microneedling, a peel or laser?
In the first 24 to 48 hours, reduce care to three products: a gentle cleanser without acids or enzymes, a soothing moisturiser with ceramides (skin-identical lipids that lock in moisture) or hyaluronic acid, and a mineral sun protection with zinc oxide. Leave out chemical UV filters, fragrances and alcohol-based toners in this phase.
When can I reintroduce retinol, vitamin C and acids?
You can usually reintroduce active ingredients as soon as the skin has visibly healed. That's typically the case after 5 to 7 days, depending on the treatment intensity. Vitamin C and acids like glycolic acid or mandelic acid usually follow from day 7 to 10. You add more highly concentrated actives or new products back in after the skin has fully calmed, one after the other, a few days apart. Follow the recommendation of your treatment provider, who knows the penetration depth of your treatment.
Mineral or chemical sun protection after a treatment?
Mineral sun protection with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is the standard after treatments. The filters sit as a layer on the skin and reflect UV radiation without penetrating the weakened barrier. Chemical filters are partly absorbed into the uppermost skin layers and can cause irritation on sensitised skin.
Colorescience Face Shield Classic and Flex are both purely mineral. Use for at least the first two weeks, after that depending on your individual sensitivity.
Is my existing care enough, or do I need special products for the recovery phase?
That depends on the intensity of the treatment and your existing products. If your daily care already includes gentle, acid-free and fragrance-free products, you can continue them for the first days. If you normally use retinol, acids, vitamin C or other active ingredients, you need a reduced transitional care. The top 4 on this page cover exactly that: a cleanser, a balm for barrier protection, soothing moisture and mineral sun protection, which any skin tolerates after a treatment.
When does the redness disappear, and when can I wear make-up again?
With most treatments, redness subsides within 24 to 72 hours. With stronger peels like the ZO Skin Health 3-Step or TCA peels it can take up to a week. You usually wear make-up again from 24 hours after the treatment, provided the skin isn't broken. Start with mineral make-up or a mineral BB cream with sun protection; avoid liquid foundations with silicones or fragrances in the first days. Apply make-up with your hand, not with sponges or brushes, to reduce friction.
