What helps with sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is not a skin type in the classical sense, but a condition: The skin's natural protective function is weakened, allowing external influences to penetrate more easily than usual. This can be genetically predisposed, caused by improper care, or occur in phases - for example, due to stress, hormonal changes, or after aggressive treatments. Couperose (visible capillaries) and sensitized skin after cosmetic treatments also fall into this category.

The most common mistake: too many products at once. Sensitive skin needs a reduced routine with a few well-tolerated active ingredients. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) can support the skin's natural protective barrier. Ceramides and hyaluronic acid provide moisture without irritating.

Avoid products with fragrances, alcohol, or strong acids. The ZO Skin Health Calming Toner is a good starting point - it soothes the skin after cleansing. For sun protection, we recommend mineral filters: The Colorescience Face Shield protects without chemical UV filters. The Colorescience Barrier Pro Essential Moisturizer was specially developed for sensitized skin with a weakened barrier and can be used as a supplement, as certain products can additionally burden sensitive skin.

Our free AI skin analysis can help you assess your skin type and find suitable products. If sensitivity occurs suddenly or is associated with severe redness, it may be advisable to consult a dermatologist.

In our beauty salon in Cologne, we regularly advise clients with sensitive skin. Experience shows that a few well-tolerated products are more effective than a complex ten-step routine. In case of persistent complaints, a dermatologist can clarify whether there is an underlying cause that requires treatment.

Related Skin Topics: Sensitive skin often overlaps with rosacea and redness or a weakened skin barrier. If dryness is the main problem, you will find suitable products for dry skin.

Frequently asked questions about sensitive skin

What helps with very sensitive skin?

Less is more: reduce your routine to cleansing, moisture and sun protection. Avoid fragrances, alcohol and strong acids.

Products with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide can support the skin's natural sense of protection. Introduce new products one at a time and wait 1-2 weeks before adding the next.

Which ingredients should sensitive skin avoid?

Sensitive skin often reacts to fragrances (including natural essential oils), alcohol (Alcohol Denat.), aggressive surfactants like SLS and SLES, and high-dose acids without prior adaptation. Retinol can also irritate at first - start with the lowest concentration here. The products in this collection are specifically chosen for sensitive skin: fragrance-free, low-irritation and barrier-supporting.

Why is my skin suddenly so sensitive?

Sudden sensitivity often has a specific trigger: a new product, cleansing that's too aggressive, stress, hormonal changes or environmental factors like cold winter air or air conditioning.

An overload of actives ("skincare overload") can also throw the skin off balance. Reduce your routine to the minimum for a while and build it back up slowly.

What do dermatologists recommend for sensitive skin?

Dermatologists recommend low-irritation basic care without fragrances, dyes and essential oils. Proven actives are niacinamide, panthenol and thermal water.

These recommendations reflect the current state of dermatology. Our range contains no products with known irritants - ZO Skin Health, iS Clinical and Colorescience rely on low-irritation formulations.

Can sensitive skin tolerate retinol too?

Yes, if you introduce it correctly. Start with the lowest concentration (0.25%) and apply it only every second evening. The mesoestetic Skinretin line combines retinol with bakuchiol for better tolerance - a good option for getting started. Alongside it, ceramides and hyaluronic acid for barrier support. If the skin doesn't react more strongly after 2 weeks, you can increase the frequency. With strong redness or burning: take a break and contact our advice team.
