What Skinimalism is
Skinimalism is a conscious decision in favour of a simple skincare routine. The term was coined in 2021 by the Pinterest Predicts Report and comes from Korean skip-care: fewer steps, but highly concentrated actives.
The three established steps are cleanse, treat, protect with sun protection. What makes Skinimalism work are active concentrates: products that combine several actives in a high dosage in one application, instead of many thinly dosed individual products.
The result: a fresh complexion, visible glow and prevention against skin ageing - with products you can count on one hand.
Three steps. Plus, optionally, a targeted exfoliation as a bonus, if you do want to try a little more.
Cleanse, treat, protect
The three steps
1. Cleanse. Lift away sebum, dirt and make-up residue. A mild cleanser once in the morning, once in the evening.
2. Treat. The decisive step. An active concentrate with antioxidants, vitamin C and, if needed, a gentle acid delivers in one application what would otherwise take several products.
3. Protect with sunscreen. The single most important anti-ageing step. A sunscreen with an added antioxidant complex counts as a combined protection step in skin minimalism.
+ Bonus: Refine. A targeted exfoliation two to three times a week. Not obligatory, but useful for an even complexion.
Three steps. Plus bonus. In one box.

Solo treatments
Here you'll find four active concentrates from three brands - each product combines several actives in one application. You'll find cleansers and sun protection in the corresponding sections further down.

Unsure if skinimalism is for you?
Skinimalism is a routine philosophy, not a panacea for every skin type. Our free AI skin analysis analyzes your skin in a few minutes and tells you whether the Daily Skincare Program is right for you or if you'd be better off with targeted active ingredients.
Sensible additions
Cleanser
For anyone who doesn't have a cleanser yet or is looking for a new one. Cleansing is the first step of any routine, in Skinimalism as everywhere else. You'll find a curated selection of mild, active-rich cleansers in our cleansing section.
Sun protection
The third Skinimalism step must not be missing. Sun protection is the most important anti-ageing step of all. Mineral or chemical, tinted or invisible - you'll find the whole range in the sun protection section.
Exfoliation as a bonus
The optional bonus step in Skinimalism. A targeted exfoliation two to three times a week supports a more even complexion and improves the absorption of the actives in the treatment products. Not obligatory, but effective.

If you want to improve specific things about your skin, you need targeted active routines instead of minimalist care:
Frequently asked questions about Skinimalism
Do I really only need three products?
For most skin types yes, provided each product is an active concentrate. Three highly concentrated active products can cover the skin needs that would otherwise take twelve drugstore products. The key lies in the concentration: a treatment with antioxidants plus vitamin C plus a gentle acid delivers in one step what would otherwise be three individual products.
Where do I start?
With the ZO Skin Health Daily Skincare Program. The travel-size set contains the three Skinimalism components plus an optional refining polish as a bonus, all in reduced size for about two months. That way you test the routine before switching to the full sizes.
Can I combine different brands in the same routine?
Across different routine steps yes, within one step no.
If you use Active Serum as the treatment step, a sun protection and a cleanser of your choice, you're not mixing brands - you use one product per step.
What doesn't work: two treatment serums from two different brands on top of each other, because formulations and actives can interfere with each other. So one brand per step, and only products developed together.
What distinguishes medical Skinimalism from drugstore minimalism?
The active concentration and the formulation quality. Drugstore minimalism reduces the number of products, but the actives per product remain low-dosed. Medical skincare like ZO Skin Health, iS Clinical or mesoestetic uses clinically dosed actives that are established in dermatology. Three products with a high active concentration achieve what fourteen drugstore products with a low concentration cannot.
When will I see first changes?
First changes typically after four to six weeks. Glycolic acid and comparable acids show finer pores a little faster, after about two to three weeks. Antioxidant effects and a more even complexion take longer, four to twelve weeks depending on skin type. The first phase can show a mild skin reaction, because the skin gets used to the higher active concentration. That's expected and settles after one to two weeks.
