Niacinamide: The All-Rounder Among Skincare Actives
Niacinamide can do almost anything and irritates almost no one. In dermatology, it is called a "workhorse" because it can support several skin functions simultaneously: barrier strengthening, sebum reduction, brightening, pore refinement, and anti-inflammation.
In our range, you'll find niacinamide primarily in Colorescience Face Shield sunscreen products and ZO Skin Health brightening products. The Colorescience All Calm Multi-Correction Serum specifically uses niacinamide to combat redness and pigment irregularities - particularly suitable for rosacea-prone skin. For melasma care, niacinamide is an important building block because it can regulate melanin distribution, is hydroquinone-free, and suitable for long-term use.
What distinguishes niacinamide from other active ingredients: It is compatible with practically everything. You can combine it with retinol, with vitamin C, with acids. There are no active ingredient incompatibilities. That's why Dr. med. Niels Freitag often recommends niacinamide in our cosmetic studio as the first active ingredient for beginners who don't want to overwhelm their skin.
Related categories: Niacinamide complements retinol (can be used on the same evening), vitamin C, and salicylic acid without overwhelming them. Niacinamide is particularly often used for pigment spots and blemished skin because it can regulate sebum production and improve melanin distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions About Niacinamide
What does niacinamide do for the skin?
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) can strengthen the skin barrier, visually refine pores, regulate excess sebum production, alleviate redness, and even out pigment irregularities. It is one of the few active ingredients that simultaneously soothe and actively nourish the skin.
Can I use niacinamide and vitamin C together?
Yes. The old recommendation to separate the two is based on outdated studies. Modern formulations are stable enough for simultaneous application. In many of our products, both active ingredients are already combined.
What concentration of niacinamide is effective?
Studies show efficacy from 2%. Most effective products contain 4-5%. Concentrations above 10% do not provide additional benefits and can cause tingling on sensitive skin.
Is niacinamide suitable for sensitive skin?
Niacinamide is one of the best-tolerated active ingredients around. It even has anti-inflammatory properties and can soothe irritated skin. Colorescience All Calm Multi-Correction Serum uses niacinamide for precisely this reason for rosacea-prone skin.
Use Niacinamide in the morning or evening?
Both are possible. Niacinamide is not UV-sensitive and is compatible with all other active ingredients. Many of our customers use it in the morning (contained in sunscreen) and in the evening (in serum). There is no wrong time of day for niacinamide.
