The most important ingredients

Salicylic acid

The only fat-soluble fruit acid (BHA) - can penetrate into the pores, where water-based acids cannot reach.

Function: Can unclog pores, clear blemishes and soothe irritated skin.

Glycolic acid

The smallest fruit acid (AHA) - can penetrate especially deep into the skin and loosen dead cells.

Function: Can accelerate skin renewal, ease pigment spots and refine skin texture.

Urea

A natural moisturising factor (NMF) of the skin - binds water in the horny layer and makes the skin supple.

Function: Can provide intensive moisture, loosen rough, hardened skin and improve the absorption of other actives.

Application

After cleansing take a pad from the container and gently stroke over face and neck. Avoid the eye area. Do not rinse.

Morning and evening use. The combination of glycolic acid and salicylic acid refines pores and smooths skin texture.

Tip: For sensitive skin start every other day and increase gradually.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AHA and BHA in the pads?

Glycolic acid (AHA) dissolves dead cells on the skin surface. Salicylic acid (BHA) is fat-soluble and penetrates the pores, so that blockages are dissolved there too.

In short: AHA works on top, BHA works at depth. Together more thorough than either acid alone.

How do the pads differ from the Oil Control Pads?

The Complexion Renewal Pads combine AHA + BHA and are for all skin types. The Oil Control Pads contain 2% salicylic acid and are specifically for very oily to blemished skin.

Normal to slightly oily skin: Complexion Renewal Pads. Very oily or blemish-prone skin: Oil Control Pads.

Can the pads cause skin irritation or redness?

For normal to oily skin: no, if you start slowly. For dry or sensitive skin: yes, if you start daily. Begin with 2-3 times a week, so that your skin barrier gets used to the chemical exfoliation.

Signal to stop: intense burning (more than 30 seconds) or blistering. Slight redness or tingling in the first 5 minutes is normal and disappears.

Is there a difference between morning and evening application?

In the morning: the acids open pores, after which sunscreen is a must. In the evening: used more often, because the skin has less UV stress and regenerates during sleep, so that the exfoliation works optimally.

Optimal: 1-2 times a week in the morning, 2-3 times a week in the evening. This spreads the intensity and lets the skin stay stable.

Can I combine the pads with vitamin C and retinol?

Yes, but not daily on the same days. Monday/Wednesday/Friday: pads. Tuesday/Thursday: vitamin C. Sunday/Saturday: retinol. This way the exfoliation processes are staggered, so that the skin is not overwhelmed.

Alternative: pads + vitamin C separately (in different routines), but never all three daily. That would lead to irritation and barrier damage.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.
