Based on an original ZO Skin Health protocol for redness

This selection follows an original ZO Skin Health protocol, in the version with retinol. The manufacturer offers several protocols; we adopted one and changed nothing. Visible redness results from the interplay of several processes, so the protocol works in three stages at once: preparation, active ingredients, protection.

This set is the stronger version with retinol. If you'd rather avoid the typical initial reactions to retinol, there is the Couperose Set without retinol.

  1. Getting Skin Ready (GSR)

GSR is the foundation of every ZO Skin Health routine: cleanse, exfoliate, tone. GSR normalizes skin functions and prepares the skin so that the following active ingredients are absorbed optimally. Without this preparation, much of the effect is lost.

  2. Activation

This is where the best comes together, now with retinol. Complexion Clarifying Serum clarifies, Daily Power Defense strengthens the barrier, Rozatrol calms skin prone to redness, and in the evening Wrinkle + Texture Repair with high-dose retinol is added for renewal. For skin prone to redness, it is introduced gradually. Retinol is light-sensitive, so it is used in the evening.

  3. Protection

The last step of every ZO Skin Health protocol is protection. The mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 protects redness-prone skin particularly gently from UV radiation. With retinol, daily protection is especially important.

Frequently asked questions

Why a set and not the individual products?

Because it lets you get more out of every product and saves you doing your own research. The six components are matched in pH, strength and order, just as a balanced diet does more than a single vitamin. You get the complete routine and pay less than when buying the items individually.

What makes this set better than a single redness cream?

Most people don't know this: ZO Skin Health fundamentally doesn't work with individual creams, but with protocols. A single cream calms briefly; a coordinated system clarifies, calms and then gently renews the skin with retinol. This set is exactly the original protocol for redness-prone skin in the retinol version.

What is the difference from the manufacturer's small sets?

The kits ZO Skin Health packages itself are officially intended as a travel and trial format, meaning smaller sizes for on the go. This set contains the same protocol logic in full size, for daily use over weeks. For trying things out, the manufacturer's kits are the way in; for the long-term routine, this set.

How does the application work day to day?

Clear and in three steps: gentle preparation, care, protection. The exact order is shown right on the page. Retinol is added in the evening as the last step and, for redness-prone skin, deliberately introduced gently.

Is it normal for the skin to react at the beginning?

Yes. Redness, slight flaking or a feeling of tightness at the start are a normal adjustment process as the skin builds tolerance. With redness-prone skin, however, you proceed deliberately carefully and introduce retinol slowly and according to tolerance. If needed, the Hydrating Crème helps soften the reactions.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.

How to use

How to use the set

The list below is also the order of application. Stick to it, it is part of how the set works.

It follows the texture, from the lightest to the richest. Light formulas with smaller molecules absorb first; rich textures go on top and would otherwise shield them.

Behind it is always the same pattern. First the preparation: cleansing, exfoliating, toning. Then the active ingredients in the order given. In the morning, sun protection comes last; in the evening, it is left out.

Morning

  1. Exfoliating Cleanser: a small amount on damp skin, gently massage in for about one minute, rinse off.
  2. Exfoliating Polish (two to three times a week, gently): a small amount, massage in, rinse off. Exfoliation belongs in the morning.
  3. Complexion Renewal Pads: one full pad over face and neck, the final step of Getting Skin Ready.
  4. Complexion Clarifying Serum: a small amount, spread evenly.
  5. Daily Power Defense: one to two pumps, avoiding the eye area.
  6. Rozatrol: a small amount on the areas prone to redness.
  7. Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50: apply generously as the final step, reapply every one to two hours in the sun.

Evening

  1. Exfoliating Cleanser: as in the morning, a small amount, massage in, rinse off.
  2. Complexion Renewal Pads: one full pad over face and neck.
  3. Complexion Clarifying Serum: spread a small amount evenly.
  4. Daily Power Defense: one to two pumps.
  5. Rozatrol: a small amount.
  6. Wrinkle + Texture Repair: a small amount as the final step. Retinol is sensitive to light, so use it in the evening only.

On using retinol with redness-prone skin: The usual recommendation is to introduce it slowly. The background is that the initial reactions are a normal adjustment process. If you want the maximum effect, daily use following the principle No Reaction No Repair is the more effective route, but with sensitive, redness-prone skin you deliberately proceed gently and follow up with the Hydrating Creme as needed. Exfoliation stays reserved for the morning.
