Frequently asked questions

What does a peel with magnesium oxide crystals achieve?

Magnesium oxide crystals create a microdermabrasion effect: they remove dead skin cells evenly without injuring the skin. Immediately visible: a smoother surface that reflects light better.

The more important effect: subsequent serums and creams penetrate better, so that the entire routine becomes more effective. That is why the polish is a central step in Getting Skin Ready.

What is the difference between magnesium and other mechanical particles?

Magnesium oxide crystals are extremely fine and uniformly round - they create a microdermabrasion effect (similar to professional skin treatments). This is much more controlled than coarse particles like pumice or apricot kernel.

For comparison: coarse particles cause micro-injuries and can trigger irritation. Magnesium glides gently over the skin, removes dead cells and leaves a smoother, more reflective surface finish, so that your skin looks more radiant immediately.

Can I use the Exfoliating Polish daily?

Yes, once a day is safe and even desirable. Many users use it in the morning after the cleanser and before the serum, to prepare the skin optimally.

The magnesium + vitamin A/C/E combination is gentle enough for daily use. The most important effect: after the polish, subsequent actives penetrate much better, so that your expensive serum or your retinol cream works considerably more effectively. The morning is ideal because you apply sunscreen afterwards.

Does this polish really improve the absorption of actives?

Yes, definitely. A smooth skin surface freed of dead cells acts as a natural active booster and is like a clean base - serums and creams can penetrate much deeper and deliver their actives more efficiently.

This is the basic principle of GSR (Getting Skin Ready): first exfoliation, then treatment. The physical barrier of dead cells is gone, so that retinol, peptides, vitamin C and other anti-ageing actives reach where they are meant to work - in the deeper skin layers.

Is the Exfoliating Polish okay for sensitive skin too?

More yes than no, but with caution. The magnesium crystals are gentler than mechanical scrubs, but it is still physical exfoliation - with very sensitive or redness-prone skin it can irritate slightly.

Test it 1-2 times a week first, observe the reaction for 24 hours. If your skin is irritated, switch to the Enzymatic Peel - that is significantly gentler. For normal and oily skin the polish is ideal, so that your skin benefits from daily exfoliation.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.
