Based on an original ZO Skin Health protocol for a weakened skin barrier

An original ZO Skin Health protocol, here with retinol. We have taken over the manufacturer's selection and added nothing. Why seven products: a weakened skin barrier needs rebuilding and protection at the same time, not one after the other. That is exactly what the protocol reflects in three stages: preparation, active ingredients, protection.

This is the stronger version with retinol. If you want to avoid the initial retinol reactions, the Barrier Set is all you need.

  1. Getting Skin Ready (GSR)

Getting Skin Ready is the foundation of every ZO Skin Health routine: cleanse, exfoliate, tone. For weakened, sensitive skin, it comes in the calming version with a mild cleanser and Calming Toner. GSR normalizes skin functions and prepares the skin so that the active ingredients that follow are optimally absorbed.

  2. Activation

This is where the best for the barrier comes together, now with retinol. Daily Power Defense strengthens the skin barrier, Rozatrol soothes redness-prone skin, and in the evening Radical Night Repair is added, ZO Skin Health's high-dose retinol for renewal. With sensitive skin, it is only introduced once the barrier is more stable. Retinol is sensitive to light, which is why it is used in the evening.

  3. Protection

The last step of every ZO Skin Health protocol is protection. The mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 protects the barrier from UV radiation in a particularly gentle way. Mineral protection is the right choice for sensitive skin.

Frequently asked questions

Why a set and not the individual products?

Because it lets you get more out of every product and saves you your own research. The five components are matched in pH, strength and order, just as a balanced diet does more than a single vitamin. You get the complete routine and pay less than when buying individually.

What makes this set better than a single cream?

Most people don't know this: ZO Skin Health fundamentally does not work with individual creams but with protocols, meaning fixed sequences in which each product has a task. A single cream calms briefly, a coordinated system strengthens the barrier and then gently renews it with retinol. This set is exactly the original protocol for sensitized skin in the retinol version.

What is the difference from the manufacturer's small sets?

The kits ZO Skin Health packages itself are officially intended as a travel and trial format, meaning smaller sizes for on the go. This set contains the same protocol logic in full size, for daily use over weeks. For trying things out, the manufacturer's kits are the way in; for the long-term routine, this set.

How does the application work day to day?

Clear and in three steps: gently prepare, care, protect. The exact order is right on the page. Retinol is added in the evening as the last step and, for sensitive skin, deliberately introduced gradually.

Is it normal for the skin to react at the beginning?

Yes. Redness, slight flaking or tightness at the beginning are a normal adjustment process, the skin builds tolerance. With sensitive skin, however, you deliberately proceed gently: first strengthen the barrier, then introduce retinol slowly and according to tolerance. If needed, the Hydrating Creme helps to soften the reactions.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.

How to use

How to use the set

The list below is also the order of application. Stick to it, it is part of how the set works.

It follows the texture, from the lightest to the richest. Light formulas with smaller molecules absorb first; rich textures go on top and would otherwise shield them.

Behind it is always the same pattern. First the preparation: cleansing, exfoliating, toning. Then the active ingredients in the order given. In the morning, sun protection comes last; in the evening, it is left out.

Morning

  1. Hydrating Cleanser: apply a small amount to damp skin, massage in gently, rinse with lukewarm water.
  2. Exfoliating Polish (two to three times a week): apply a small amount to damp skin, massage in gently, then rinse thoroughly. Exfoliation belongs in the morning.
  3. Calming Toner: sweep gently over face and neck with a cotton pad, the last step of Getting Skin Ready.
  4. Daily Power Defense: one to two pumps on face and neck, avoiding the eye area.
  5. Rozatrol: a small amount on the areas prone to redness.
  6. Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50: apply generously as the last step; when spending time in the sun, reapply every one to two hours.

Evening

  1. Hydrating Cleanser: as in the morning, a small amount, massage in gently, rinse.
  2. Calming Toner: over face and neck with a cotton pad.
  3. Daily Power Defense: one to two pumps.
  4. Rozatrol: a small amount.
  5. Radical Night Repair: a small amount as the last step. Retinol is sensitive to light, so evenings only.

Using retinol on sensitive skin: Unlike with resilient skin, the barrier comes first here. Introduce Radical Night Repair slowly, according to tolerance, once the skin is calmer, and follow up with the Hydrating Creme if needed. Initial reactions are a normal adjustment process, but with sensitized skin you deliberately proceed gently. Exfoliation stays reserved for the morning.
