Frequently asked questions

What sets the ZO Skin Health vitamin C serum apart from normal vitamin C products?

Two forms of vitamin C instead of one. 10% pure ascorbic acid (L-Ascorbic Acid) works on the skin surface and brightens existing pigment spots. A second, fat-soluble vitamin C derivative (Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate) penetrates into deeper skin layers and slows new pigment formation there - by up to 80% according to the manufacturer.

Most vitamin C serums work only on the surface. The dual system from ZO Skin Health acts on top and at depth at the same time, so that visible spots become lighter while fewer new ones form.

Which skin type is the 10% vitamin C suitable for?

For all skin types affected by a dull complexion, uneven skin tone or pigment spots. Alongside vitamin C, it contains coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E for antioxidant protection, as well as squalane as a skin-like moisturiser.

Important: do not use at the same time as retinol. Vitamin C belongs in the morning routine, retinol in the evening routine. For very sensitive skin, apply every other day at first and always combine with SPF 30+ sunscreen.

Why doesn't this vitamin C oxidise in the jar?

The vitamin C is in a stabilised form that is only activated on contact with the skin - hence the name Self-Activating. It does not react with air and light as long as it is in the jar.

With cheaper vitamin C products, exactly that happens: they turn brown, which means the vitamin C has oxidised and is ineffective. With the Self-Activating, the full concentration is retained right up to the last application.

How do I incorporate the vitamin C into my ZO Skin Health routine?

Apply in the morning after cleansing and after Daily Power Defense. The order is crucial: Daily Power Defense first strengthens the skin barrier, so that the vitamin C is absorbed better and irritates less. Sunscreen afterwards.

In the evening, use retinol products instead. Vitamin C and retinol complement each other ideally across the day - they just should not go on the skin at the same time.

Can I wear the vitamin C under make-up?

Yes, definitely. After applying, wait 2-3 minutes until it has absorbed. Then apply your normal moisturiser and sunscreen, so that the vitamin C actives are worked in and the skin has a smooth base for make-up.

Tip: the vitamin C brightens pigment spots, so that over time you need less concealer. Many people report a more even skin tone after 4-6 weeks.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.
