Based on an original ZO Skin Health protocol for pigment spots

Seven products based on an original ZO Skin Health protocol, in the version with retinol. The selection comes from the manufacturer, we have added nothing. Uneven pigmentation results from the interplay of several processes. Hence the three stages of preparation, active ingredients and protection, with protection not being an add-on but the condition for the rest to become visible at all.

This is the stronger version with retinol. Without the typical initial reactions to retinol, go for the Anti-Pigment Set.

  1. Getting Skin Ready (GSR)

GSR is the foundation of every ZO Skin Health routine: cleanse, exfoliate, tone. GSR normalizes skin functions and prepares the skin so that the following active ingredients are absorbed optimally. Without this preparation, much of the effect is lost.

  2. Activation

This is where the best comes together, now with retinol. Daily Power Defense strengthens the skin barrier, Brightalive brightens, and in the evening Retinol Skin Brightener is added, the high-potency retinol stage for uneven pigmentation. Retinol is sensitive to light, which is why it is used in the evening. None of these products contains just one active ingredient; each contains a whole blend.

  3. Protection

The last step of every ZO Skin Health protocol is protection. The mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 protects against UV radiation, the most important trigger of new pigment spots. Daily protection is part of every protocol.

Frequently asked questions

Why a set and not the individual products?

Because you get more out of every product and save yourself the research. The seven components are matched in pH, strength and order, just as a balanced diet does more than a single vitamin. You get the complete routine and pay less than buying the products individually.

What makes this set better than a single cream for pigment spots?

Most people don't know this: ZO Skin Health fundamentally does not work with individual creams but with protocols, meaning fixed sequences in which each product has a task and is matched to the next. A single cream cannot fully reach the skin with its multiple layers, a coordinated system can. This set is exactly the original brightening protocol in the retinol version.

What is the difference from the manufacturer's small sets?

The kits ZO Skin Health packages itself are officially intended as a travel and trial format, meaning smaller sizes for on the go. This set contains the same protocol logic in full size, for daily use over weeks. For trying things out, the manufacturer's kits are the way in; for the long-term routine, this set.

How does the application work day to day?

Clear and in three steps: prepare, care, protect. The exact order for morning and evening is right on the page. Retinol is added in the evening. Daily use is recommended; if you want to start more gently, use it less often at first.

Is it normal for the skin to react at the beginning?

Yes, and it's even intended. The usual recommendation is to introduce retinol slowly, which is easier on tolerability. The background: redness, light flaking or tightness at the start are a normal adjustment process, the skin is building tolerance. If you want the maximum effect, use it daily following the principle No Reaction No Repair, then tolerance builds faster and the result gets better, and the initial phase is short. If you prefer a gentler approach, use it less often or follow up with the Hydrating Creme.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.

How to use

How to use the set

The list below is also the order of application. Stick to it, it is part of how the set works.

It follows the texture, from the lightest to the richest. Light formulas with smaller molecules absorb first; rich textures go on top and would otherwise shield them.

Behind it is always the same pattern. First the preparation: cleansing, exfoliating, toning. Then the active ingredients in the order given. In the morning, sun protection comes last; in the evening, it is left out.

Morning

  1. Exfoliating Cleanser: apply a small amount to damp skin, gently massage in for about a minute, rinse off with lukewarm water.
  2. Exfoliating Polish (two to three times a week): apply a small amount to damp skin, gently massage in, then rinse thoroughly. Exfoliation belongs in the morning.
  3. Complexion Renewal Pads: use one whole pad, don't cut it. Work over face and neck with both sides, actively wiping across all of the skin until the pad is no longer damp. The last step of Getting Skin Ready.
  4. Daily Power Defense: one to two pumps on face and neck, avoiding the eye area.
  5. Brightalive: apply one to two pumps evenly.
  6. Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50: apply generously as the last step, reapply every one to two hours when in the sun.

Evening

  1. Exfoliating Cleanser: as in the morning, a small amount, massage in for about a minute, rinse off.
  2. Complexion Renewal Pads: one whole pad, actively over face and neck with both sides until the pad is no longer damp.
  3. Daily Power Defense: one to two pumps.
  4. Brightalive: one to two pumps.
  5. Retinol Skin Brightener: as the last step, a small amount. Retinol is sensitive to light, so only use it in the evening.

On using retinol: The usual recommendation is to introduce it slowly, mainly for tolerability. The background is that the initial reactions are a normal adjustment process during which the skin builds tolerance. If you want the maximum effect, our recommendation is therefore daily use according to the principle No Reaction No Repair: the reactions at the start are intended, tolerance is reached faster and the result is better, the initial phase is temporary and short. If you'd rather take it more gently, use it less often or follow up with the Hydrating Creme.

Exfoliation stays reserved for the morning.
