Frequently asked questions

What does Triple-Spectrum Protection mean?

Protection on three levels: UVA (skin ageing), UVB (sunburn) and HEV - blue light, as it comes from screens and the sun. Most sunscreens cover only UVA and UVB.

Blue light penetrates deeper into the skin than UV and can promote pigment spots and premature ageing - especially relevant if you work a lot at a screen.

Why mineral instead of chemical?

Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) reflect UV rays like a shield. Chemical filters absorb them and convert them into heat - some people react with irritation, especially with retinol.

This mineral SPF 50 with zinc oxide is a pure barrier. That is why it is ideal if you use retinol-containing products or have sensitive skin. Apply it 15 minutes before sun exposure.

What is blue light and why does it damage the skin?

Blue light (HEV = High Energy Visible Light) comes from the sun AND from screens (phone, computer). It penetrates deeper than UV radiation and can activate melanocytes (pigment cells), so that pigment spots form and oxidative stress arises.

Anyone who sits in front of a screen a lot needs HEV protection just as much as UV protection. The natural melanin in this sunscreen filters exactly this light - very valuable if you are online every day.

How much sunscreen do I need per application?

Apply the sunscreen generously to face and neck. Many people apply too little, so that the SPF doesn't work. Apply it undiluted, not mixed with moisturiser.

Apply after serum/vitamin C, let it absorb briefly, then make-up. With retinol use it is a must every morning - the skin is more sensitive to the sun.

Can this sunscreen leave marks on textiles?

Yes, zinc oxide-based sunscreens can leave slight marks on dark fabric. But this is easy to avoid: after applying, wait until the emulsion has fully absorbed. Then a light powder over the top or simply spread it carefully by hand.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.
