Why we combine retinol with a safety net

Our pairing of retinol and calming care, here in the anti-aging version. In the first weeks, retinol can cause dryness, flaking or a slight feeling of tightness. This is a normal initial reaction and depends on the dose. That is exactly what the second product in the duo is for. People who have both at hand are less likely to give up.

There are two more versions of this duo, a brightening one and a more intensive one.

  1. Night retinol

Radical Night Repair is ZO Skin Health's high-strength night retinol that stimulates cell renewal and works on lines and texture. Retinol is sensitive to light, so use it in the evening.

  2. Lifeline

The Hydrating Creme cushions initial reactions such as tightness or flaking, provides moisture and strengthens the barrier without slowing down the effect of the retinol.

  3. How to combine both

In the evening after cleansing, a small amount of Radical Night Repair. If the skin reacts, apply a small amount of Hydrating Crème on top or the next morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the second cream next to the retinol for?

Because high-dose retinol can irritate at first. The Hydrating Creme cushions tightness or flaking and provides moisture without slowing down the retinol effect. This very safety net makes the initial phase easier.

Is it normal for the skin to react at the beginning?

Yes, and it is part of the process. Redness, flaking or a feeling of tightness at the start show that the skin is adjusting and building tolerance. The Hydrating Crème softens these reactions when they become too strong.

How often should I use the retinol?

Daily for the maximum effect, following the principle No Reaction No Repair. If you prefer a gentler approach, start with two to three evenings a week and increase as tolerated. Retinol is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding; please seek advice beforehand.

Does the duo make a good gift?

Yes. Two coordinated products in a high-quality combination, with clear instructions. A considered gift for anyone who appreciates good skincare.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.

How to use

How to use the set

The list below is also the order of application. Stick to it, it is part of how the set works.

It follows the texture, from the lightest to the richest. Light formulas with smaller molecules absorb first; rich textures go on top and would otherwise shield them.

Behind it is always the same pattern. First the preparation: cleansing, exfoliating, toning. Then the active ingredients in the order given. In the morning, sun protection comes last; in the evening, it is left out.

Evening

  1. Radical Night Repair: a small amount on cleansed skin, as the last active ingredient. Retinol is sensitive to light, so use it only in the evening.
  2. Hydrating Creme: if your skin feels tight or flakes, apply a small amount on top, otherwise as needed.

On using retinol: The usual recommendation is to build up slowly. The background is that the initial reactions are a normal adjustment process. If you want the maximum effect, use it daily according to the principle No Reaction No Repair and use Hydrating Creme to cushion reactions. Always use sun protection during the day. Retinol is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
