Why we combine retinol with a safety net

Our pairing of retinol and calming care, here with a brightening focus. In the first weeks, retinol can cause dryness, flaking or a slight feeling of tightness. This is a normal initial reaction and depends on the dose. That is exactly what the second product in the duo is for. If you have both together, you are less likely to give up.

There is also the anti-aging version and the more intensive version.

  1. Brightening retinol

Retinol Skin Brightener combines retinol with brighteners, accelerates cell renewal and works on pigment spots. Retinol is sensitive to light, so use it in the evening.

  2. Lifeline

Hydrating Creme cushions initial reactions such as tightness or flaking, provides moisture and strengthens the barrier without slowing down the effect.

  3. How to combine both

In the evening after cleansing, a small amount of Retinol Skin Brightener. If reactions occur, a small amount of Hydrating Creme on top or the next morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the second cream next to the retinol for?

Because retinol can irritate at first. The Hydrating Creme softens tightness or flaking and provides moisture without slowing the brightening effect. The safety net makes the initial phase much easier.

Why is sun protection so important here?

Because UV radiation triggers and intensifies pigment spots. Without daily sun protection in the morning, the brightening retinol works against a constant new stimulus. So SPF is part of the effect, not just protection.

How often should I use the retinol?

Daily for the maximum effect, following the principle No Reaction No Repair. If you prefer a gentler approach, start with two to three evenings a week. Retinol is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding; please seek advice beforehand.

Does the duo make a good gift?

Yes. Two coordinated products in a high-quality combination, with clear instructions. A considered gift for anyone who appreciates good skincare.

About the brand

ZO Skin Health was developed by Dr. Zein Obagi - one of the world's most renowned dermatologists, with over 35 years of research in Beverly Hills. His principle: the skin is not “repaired” from the outside; instead, the cells themselves are activated. Because collagen, elastin and cell renewal decline with age, ZO products work in a targeted way across different skin layers - as system skincare following established treatment protocols, not as a single product.

How to use

How to use the set

The list below is also the order of application. Stick to it, it is part of how the set works.

It follows the texture, from the lightest to the richest. Light formulas with smaller molecules absorb first; rich textures go on top and would otherwise shield them.

Behind it is always the same pattern. First the preparation: cleansing, exfoliating, toning. Then the active ingredients in the order given. In the morning, sun protection comes last; in the evening, it is left out.

Evening

  1. Retinol Skin Brightener: a small amount on cleansed skin as the last active ingredient. Retinol is sensitive to light, so only in the evening.
  2. Hydrating Creme: if the skin feels tight or flaky, a small amount on top, otherwise as needed.

Always apply sun protection during the day, with pigment spots it is essential. To start, use the retinol two to three times a week and increase as tolerated up to daily use. For maximum effect, daily use following the principle No Reaction No Repair, the Hydrating Creme cushions reactions. Retinol is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
