Why sun protection is the most important skincare step
80% of visible skin ageing goes back to UV radiation. That's not an estimate, it's the scientific consensus, confirmed by decades of dermatological research - and the reason why, in our skincare studio in Cologne, we don't put together an anti-ageing routine for any customer without building in sun protection as the last step. Without it, the rest is cosmetics, not an investment.
Our range covers both filter types. Mineral sun protection products (Colorescience, partly ZO) physically reflect UV rays with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They work immediately after application and are particularly well tolerated. The Colorescience Face Shield line goes even further: EnviroScreen technology additionally protects against pollution, blue light (HEV) and infrared radiation.
Chemical sun protection products (ZO Skin Health) absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. They often have a lighter, non-comedogenic texture and don't leave a white cast. Many products use color-adaptive technology with a universal shade that adapts to different skin tones. The ZO Sheer Fluid SPF 50 is a good example: invisible on the skin, high protection.
For pigment spots, the mesoestetic Mesoprotech Melan 130 is the strongest option: SPF 130+ with additional brightening actives. Especially after depigmentation treatments (cosmelan, Cyspera), when the skin is particularly sensitive to UV.
The most common mistake: applying too little. For the face you need about half a teaspoon. Most people apply only a third of that and then have only SPF 15 instead of SPF 50. Reapply every 2 hours - or simply brush over your make-up with the Colorescience Brush-On Shield.

Frequently asked questions about sun protection
Mineral or chemical - which sun protection is better?
Neither is better across the board. Mineral filters reflect UV rays and work immediately - ideal for sensitive skin. Chemical filters absorb UV rays, often have a lighter texture and don't leave a white cast. For sensitive skin we recommend mineral (Colorescience Face Shield).
How much sun protection do I need for the face?
About half a teaspoon (roughly 1.25 ml) for face and neck. Most people apply considerably less and then get only SPF 15 to 20 instead of SPF 50. Better to apply generously.
How often do I need to reapply sun protection?
Every 2 hours with direct sun exposure. For reapplying over make-up, the Colorescience Brush-On Shield is ideal - just brush it over, without ruining the make-up.
What does EnviroScreen mean at Colorescience?
EnviroScreen is Colorescience's patented technology that goes beyond pure UV protection. Besides UVA and UVB, it also protects against pollution, blue light (HEV) and infrared radiation. No other sun protection in our range offers this fourfold protection.
Do I need sun protection in winter too?
Yes. UVA radiation is constant all year round and penetrates clouds and windows. UVA causes the majority of skin ageing and pigmentation. If you use retinol or vitamin C, you make the skin more sensitive to UV.
